Concrete Coated Pipeline
ChallengeA pipeline under construction required that concrete be attached for weight to keep the pipeline from floating to the surface where it crossed a river or muskeg. The concrete ballast was formed-in-place, and created a 360 degree sleeve around the length of the pipeline.
Objective
To provide a portable concrete-curing system which would operate on a stand-alone basis in a remote location enduring extreme cold and windy weather conditions.
Solution
ICS designed and patented an all-in-one concrete coated pipeline curing system, Climate Change Tarp System (CCTS), that heats, insulates, radiates and controls moisture. This system integrates a hydronic heating system (glycol and water filled hose) into a flexible insulating tarp. The freshly poured concrete is wrapped with the CCTS, which provides a curing-climate for the concrete.
Result
- The CCTS enveloped the pipe providing 360◦ degrees of controlled curing environment when the ambient air temperature was minus 40◦C combined with blowing snow. Making blizzards, heavy snowfall and high winds non-issues.
- The Portable Climate Control energy-efficient system of 800,000 btu/h required re-fuelling at a single point – only once every 24 hours.
- Fire risk was eliminated.
- The concrete cured to the required engineering specification within the scheduled time-frame, in a remote and challenging environment.
